Excerpt

As I sat there on the side of Quincy’s bed, the last straw flew in through the bedroom window and landed right on my camel’s back. Quincy, my fiancé and the love of my life, was in the shower whistling. He was whistling like he didn’t have a care in the world. He was whistling like I wasn’t thirty-seven and kicking the hell out of forty. He was whistling like I wasn’t unmarried and childless. Like we hadn’t been engaged for five years. Five years. He was whistling like he hadn’t refused to set a wedding date. Like my biological clock wasn’t ticking as loud as a time bomb.

I’d been with Quincy Wright for eight years. I’d been his lover and friend. I’d bent over backwards, neglected my own needs, and done all I could do to be a good woman. I wanted a husband and I wanted children and he knew it. We’d discussed it at length. And what was his response? His black behind was in the shower whistling. That was it and whether he knew it or not, it was over. O-V-E-R

First, let me say that after I finished Ain't Nobody by Adrienne Thompson, I was exhausted. I had been right there with the heroine, Alexandria from the beginning struggles "When a Woman's Fed Up" to the triumphant end of the Epilogue. I can not count the number of OMG moments that I had while reading this story. The secondary characters are so intricately woven into the main plot that they stand out like red flags. Can you say Dysfunctional? Underlying the main plot of the heroine and hero, who has some issues of his own, seeking a HEA, are subplots of years of secrecy, sexual abuse, and lies. Our heroine has to face and confront these demons, forgive those who participated knowingly and unaware; then get her immediate family to do the same. It's complicated, people, but so worth the journey.
It is a romantic story, to be sure. The chemistry between the heroine and hero, Victor is explosive. I loved the character of Alexandria because she refused to settle. It wasn't an easy journey by no means, but she handled it. But that's real life, isn't it. Adrienne Thompson has a gift of giving us real life situations, strong heroines, and intense journeys. I recommend this novel because it's well worth the journey!

Ain't Nobody edition by Adrienne Thompson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Adrienne Thompson just keeps getting better and better! I’m behind on reading her books, and since I had a 3+ hour flight to get through and it was Sunday, I decided to read this book (for whatever crazy reason, I always read her books on Sunday). This book was outstanding! There were soooo many funny lines that seriously had me laughing out loud in the airport, and on the plane (my sister, who I was traveling with, was not amused). This review contains what may be considered spoilers, so proceed with caution.

I loved Alex. When she got involved with Victor I was like ‘girl, don’t do it’, then ‘why him, he’s kinda sketchy, isn’t he’, but I couldn’t blame her. I guess I’m gon’ learn to stop doubting Ms. Thompson and these characters that she creates, cause she clearly knows what she is doing. Alex was a mess with that hot temper! She would get mad and all hell would break loose, LOL. I could definitely understand her confusion about Quincy and Victor. Quincy knew what to say, and when and how to say it to get to her. I almost fell for his lies at one point. And Victor was so convincing when telling her not love him. And the staying out late, and not coming home definitely didn’t help. I wasn’t sure who she was going to end up with, but Ms. Thompson is a master at creating crazy, unforeseen events that take her characters through the fire, and then remind that that God can bring you through ANYthing! And when life gets rough, don’t we all need that reminder from time to time? It’s amazing how she does this in a way that isn’t preachy or over the top, but just…right. She gives me something to think about and be thankful for every time I read one of her books.

So many complicated side characters in this one. Even though we found out why Farrah acted the way she did, I still didn’t like her. She and Quincy were despicable. And Gwin and Mama weren’t much better, although I understood Mama a little better after her confession. I guess. I really need to work on my ability to forgive, because I would have kicked that whole bunch to the curb. What a nest of vipers!

Anyway, read this book. It’s good! Keep doing your thing, Ms. Thompson!
The story follows the life of Alex Weaver, self-employed business woman in her late 30's knocking on 40's door. Alex is currently in a relationship with Quincy Wright. For 8 years she's been all his, his lover, friend, companion and is presently engaged to be married; however a date has yet to be set. One fateful day changes everything for Alex when she discovers Quincy's unfaithfulness. Alex's relationship with her family is strained from the beginning. She has done everything her mother ever wanted her to do and accomplished them all and it's still not enough. Alex feels that her sister Farrah hates her and their relationship is more tumultuous than sisterly. Following the breakup with Quincy, Alex decided to take her honeymoon in Brazil sans the wedding. While in Rio, Alex meets Brazilian native Victor Castro. Victor sees something in Alex that draws him in and terrifies him the same time. Returning back home Alex is confronted once again with the problems she left behind. Seeing no way out of the situation, Alex decided to take matters into her own hands. But whose hands will be left holding onto Alex?
This was my first time reading Adrienne's work. I must say I was immediately drawn in. This book touched on so many subjects ranging from childhood abuse, self esteem, and forgiveness. It was drama filled and sexually driven. It kept me turning pages, gripping my kindle and most of all pulling me deeper into the lives of the characters. I will definitely be checking out more of this author's work in the very near future. 5 stars
I’ve enjoyed reading the works of Adrienne Thompson. In this latest novel, “Ain’t Nobody,” Thompson steps out of her comfort zone and creates a main character who stretches the boundaries of Thompson’s previous main characters. Alex is the opposite of characters we’re usually familiar with by Thompson, she’s hostile, edgy, and very bold. Alex is determined to get married and have a family at any cost- literally! After her boyfriend Quincy of eight years committed an unforgivable sin, Alex is fed up! She packs her bags and head to Rio on a quest for love. She brings back her lover boy, and a surprise for all of her family and friends. But, will Alex be satisfied with her new family and new marriage? What happens when everyone finds out the truth? This is a fast-paced read that I finished in one day. The drama was non-stop. This is a story that will keep you turning the pages and begging for more.
